April Fools!

If you've been following us a while, you know that we like to have a little bit of fun on April 1, and this year was no exception.  This year's April Fools joke was inspired (and somewhat plagiarised) by the news last week that Goose Island, one of the breweries that inspire us to do what we do, had sold out to ABInbev (the world's largest brewing company, maker of Stella, Becks, Budweiser and about 100 other brands).

This is the biggest response we have ever had to one of our newsletters, so we definitely touched a nerve.  Those that were burned by previous April Fools jokes weren't taken so easily this time, but man, a lot of you were.

Here is a selection of some of the responses:

April 1, 2010 - Lovibonds Expansion Update

- Jeff, I am absolutely thrilled for you. All the hard work has paid off and you so totally deserve it.
-  OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-  I fully understand and appreciate the position you are in and hope the future brings you lots of new challenges and rewards for all your hard work.   I will continue to enjoy your Beers
-  Bugger me, congratulations you sly old Fox!
-  Doesn't leave me wondering at all. Please unsubscribe me from the list immediately. Is there any refund available on your Growlers?  [this is my favourite, wondering how many others had this sentiment]
-  You wee Fecker!

So, please rest assured, we have NOT sold out to 'the man' and remain extremely independent.

Trademark Dispute   Would you be confused between this old school whisky brand and the ultra modern 69 IPA?  I think not!

One thing that I eluded to in the April Fools email was a trademark dispute with Diageo.  This was a genuine piece of news as Diageo threatened to oppose our recent trademark application for 69 IPA because they felt that it could be confused with their VAT 69 whisky brand.  You can read my description of how this unfolded here

When word got out on the street about this, there were several great blog posts made here, here and here on the subject and we also got some good trade press.  At this point in time it appears that Diageo have decided not to take this any further, but I'm afraid to say any more until the trademark lands on my desk here at Lovibonds HQ.  Stay tuned.

Lovibonds exporting to Denmark

There is a great craft beer revolution happening in Denmark and we have had importers requesting our beer for quite some time and finally sent a pallet of Lovibonds to help quench their thirst.

New face in the Tasting Room

Those that are regulars of the tasting room will note that we have a new face behind the bar.  Please welcome Chris Donnachie to the land of Lovibond.  He's probably 100 times over qualified, but that is one of the reasons he got the job.  Please stop in and say hi.

Customer News

Magoos, Henley

Magoos was our first proper customer and continues to be a great outlet for us in Henley.  Not only can you find Henley Gold and Amber on draught, but they are now also stocking 69 IPA in bottles.

Spirited Wines, Henley

Spirited Wines, previously known as Nicolas and before that Odd Bins is about a 1 minute walk from our place, being in Henley's market place.  Always known for its great selection of wine and spirits, we've been trying to sell into there for several years and finally with some new head office management we are in there.  You can now buy Henley Gold, Dark and 69 IPA in bottles, please let them know you appreciate their support.

The Old House, Warren Row

By the end of the week you'll be able to enjoy Henley Gold on draught at another one of the areas fine free houses.

No. 2 Pound Street, Wendover

Probably the furthest north that you can enjoy Lovibonds at the moment.  No. 2 Pounds Street in Wendover has a great selection of wines, breads, meats and cheeses.  It has now added Lovibonds beer to its selection.

Cheers for now, hope to see you soon!

Jeff
